Drabbles

If you’re not sure what a Drabble actually is,  it’s a short piece of fiction that is 100 words long. Not 99, not 101 – 100 exactly.  I could go into a long song and dance about how I first learned about drabbles and why I decided to start writing them, but why go into great detail when I can sum it up nicely in just 100 words? So here it is folks, my first shot at writing a drabble. A little story I call: “I Blame Jake Bible.” (P.S. If you’re keeping score, this introduction is also 100 words)

I BLAME JAKE BIBLE

It’s all his fault! I was content writing novellas and short stories then Mister “Dead Mech” himself comes along and ruins it.
“Drabble smabble,” I thought, “what’s so hard about writing one hundred words?”
I gave a casual listen to his podcast and now I’m hooked: on his story and on trying to write my own damn drabbles.
I thought I had it under control; just drabble every now and then, but I was wrong. It’s like a religion and Mr. Bible wrote the book, pardon the pun, on drabble novels.
Hi, my name is Kenn and I’m a drabble-a-holic

THE GUNFIGHT AT HIGH NOON

Sheriff Holden snickered through parched lips. One eye squinted closed as he stared down the barrel of his Winchester; his finger itchy on the trigger. The outlaw was in his sights. The high noon sun watched silently. Holden’s throat was as dry as the sand under his belly; his stomach rumbled. He slowly started to squeeze the trigger. A piercing sound behind him broke his concentration. It was a sound he knew he couldn’t ignore. “I’ll get you next time,” Holden spat before yelling, “Coming Mom,” and dropped his gun in the sandbox then ran in the house for lunch.
